NYJ: William Randolph Hearst
NYW: Joseph Pulitizer
-Were in competition with each other
-Used sensationalist headlines to attract buyers and sell more newspapers
-Both exaggerated topics that involved the Spanish American War.
*Because of the yellow press America were aware of what was going on in the war; but some of the details enlisted in the papers were false. Editors only wanted more sales and wanted the papers to be more entertaining.
-Yellow journalism is also known as one of the causes of the war because of all the gossip that was put inside.
-They would usually simply make up their stories of "personal experience" or based them on slanted press releases from the Cuban Junta
-Basically, due to the public opinion that they had such thorough control over, propaganda was the decisive factor in starting this war. So, overall, this becomes one of the most significant and representative events in the history of modern propaganda.
-one can be relatively sure that this war may very well have not happened without the encouragement of the propaganda put out by newspapers all over America. (if it wasnt for the "yellow kids"
